On Wednesday evening, a tragic accident involving the historic Elevador da Gloria funicular in Lisbon resulted in the deaths of at least 15 individuals and left 18 others injured, according to reports from Portugal's health ministry. Among the injured, five are reported to be in critical condition.
The incident occurred shortly after 6 PM local time when a cable reportedly snapped, causing the funicular to lose control and crash into a nearby building, as detailed by local fire officials. The Elevador da Gloria, a century-old cable railway established in 1885, is a significant part of Lisbon's transportation network, connecting Restauradores Square with the picturesque Bairro Alto area.
This two-car system is designed to navigate steep hills and caters to both residents and the millions of tourists who visit the city each year. Each tram has a capacity of 42 passengers and is operated by Carris, the public transport authority in Lisbon. Tiago Augusto, head of the health ministry, confirmed that the victims included both locals and foreign nationals, although their identities have not yet been disclosed. Notably, no children were among those who lost their lives.
Reports indicate that both passengers on the derailed funicular and nearby pedestrians were affected by the incident. While the Elevador da Gloria is not frequently used by locals, it remains a cherished symbol of Lisbon and a popular tourist attraction, offering scenic views of historic neighborhoods. By 8:30 PM local time, all injured individuals had been transported to local hospitals. Six people, including one child and another with serious injuries, were admitted to Santa Maria Hospital.
Additionally, nine others, five of whom are in critical condition, were taken to São Jose Hospital. In response to the tragedy, Lisbon's Mayor Carlos Moedas expressed his condolences on social media, describing it as a "tragic moment" for the city. He stated, "Lisbon is in mourning. This is a tragic moment for the city. The teams from CML – Firefighters Sappers Regiment, Civil Protection and Municipal Police, along with Volunteer Firefighters, the PSP, and INEM, are on the scene providing assistance. The victims have been taken to the hospital. I deeply regret the lives lost and all the suffering caused. At this moment, what matters is to act: support the families, assist the injured and ensure all necessary support to the authorities on the ground."
He also announced a period of three days of Municipal Mourning for the victims of this unfortunate incident, extending heartfelt condolences to the families and friends affected.
